Kumiko Snowflake - Dec 7
Kumiko is a Japanese craft technique used to create geometric patterns using wooden pieces joined together without the use of any nails or glue. Quiet handsaws, wood planes and chisels are used to make fine adjustments so that the wooden pieces fit just right into their patterns. There are many traditional patterns and Japanese masters to draw inspiration from. For this workshop, we asked Johnny Tromboukis to create a pattern that could help us get into the winter spirit… a snowflake!
In this four-hour workshop with Johnny, we’ll focus on tool safety and technique. You will learn and have a chance to practice with small chisels, Japanese pull saws and hand-made jigs. To make the snowflake pattern, you will start with basswood strips and go through the process of cutting accurate half lap joints to make a grid. Then, use kumiko jigs to cut bevels and assemble the pattern. If you wish, you can add rice paper to the back and a ribbon for hanging your piece on a tree or window. Johnny will also share his experiences working with kumiko and examples of his own usage of kumiko in furniture, lighting and other decorative art pieces.
